Dharavi Redevelopment Project: Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd Takes Charge of INR 20,000-Crore Transformation

Dharavi Redevelopment Project Pvt Ltd (DRPPL), the firm spearheading the redevelopment of Dharavi, Asia's largest slum in Mumbai, has officially rebranded itself as Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd (NMDPL). This strategic move, approved by the board of directors and the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, seeks to clarify the company’s identity and distinguish it from the Dharavi Redevelopment Authority (DRA), a state government entity overseeing the project.

A Joint Venture for Urban Renewal

NMDPL is a collaborative initiative between the Adani Group and the Government of Maharashtra. With the Adani Group holding an 80% stake and the Maharashtra government retaining 20%, the joint venture embodies a public-private partnership model. This structure ensures government oversight while leveraging private sector efficiency and expertise.

Adani Group’s Leadership and Investment

The rebranding follows Adani Properties’ successful bid in November 2022 to lead the ambitious INR 20,000-crore redevelopment project. Spanning 600 acres in Mumbai's prime area, the initiative promises to transform Dharavi into a modern urban hub. Adani’s plans include upgrading the region into a world-class district while retaining housing provisions for eligible residents.

Transforming Dharavi: A Vision for the Future

Home to nearly one million people, Dharavi is a densely populated slum featuring precarious housing and inadequate sanitation. The project envisions converting 620 acres—almost three-quarters the size of New York’s Central Park—into a state-of-the-art urban landscape. Residents eligible under the scheme will receive flats of up to 350 sq. ft. free of cost, marking a significant improvement in living standards.

A Milestone in Urban Development

The renaming to Navbharat Mega Developers Pvt Ltd symbolizes the beginning of a transformative phase for the Dharavi redevelopment project. While the name may have changed, the partnership between the Maharashtra government and the Adani Group remains steadfast. The project is poised to set a benchmark in slum redevelopment and urban renewal in India.
